Oracle buys Sun; Now owns Java; Becomes a hardware player

Just think of all of the products this will affect: MySQL, OpenOffice, Java, VirtualBox, and the Oracle DB are included among the ones that I use personally. This will also give Oracle the opportunity to provide a complete stack for their Oracle Database and Applications. I can’t say that I’d mind buying an Oracle Database that runs on an OS and hardware that are tweaked for database performance and fully supported by Oracle.

I’m a bit afraid, however, of what will become of the Open Source products that they’ve acquired; specifically MySQL. I think that perhaps it’s time to get familiar with PostgreSQL. Heck, I can even code in PL/SQL over there…perhaps I should have done that a long time ago.

French police: we saved millions of euros by adopting Ubuntu

From the article:

Since 2004, he says that the Gendarmerie has saved up to €50 million on licensing and maintenance costs as a result of the migration strategy. He believes that the move from Windows to Ubuntu posed fewer challenges than the organization would have faced if it had updated to Windows Vista.
“Moving from Microsoft XP to Vista would not have brought us many advantages and Microsoft said it would require training of users,” said Lt. Col. Guimard. “Moving from XP to Ubuntu, however, proved very easy. The two biggest differences are the icons and the games. Games are not our priority.”

West Michigan should identify itself to world as Chicagoland, Econ Club speaker says

This article has some well-thought-out points about how it’s time for the Midwest to cut ties to the “Rust Belt” past and start working for the future. Well, except for the whole “West Michigan identifying as Greater Chicagoland” thing. That’s ridiculous.

"A visual representation of the stimulus package is: Imagine you see a person at work taking buckets of water from the deep end of a swimming pool and dumping them into the shallow end in an attempt to make it deeper. You would deem him stupid. That scenario is equivalent to what Congress and the new president proposes for the economy."
