MLB.com Audio = Train Wreck
Last year, I would often find myself straining to listen to Tigers day games on an old radio I brought from home. Since our office is architecturally similar to a minimum-security prison (grey cinder-block walls, tiny windows, big steel doors every 20 feet or so throughout), the reception was shaky at best. This year, I thought “Hey…mlb.com audio is only $15 for the whole year. ...

JW Dundee's Porter
Dark, chocolatey, roasty. It’s a typical porter, but just a bit hoppier, which I find pleasing. However, there is a weird tanginess in the finish that I can’t quite put my finger on. Overall, a solid porter, especially for the middle-of-the-road price.

Boulder Beer Cold Hop Ale
Pours golden orange with a light tan head.  Starts with malty sweetness, fades into a lingering hoppy finish.  Mouthfeel is quite tingly.  Cold Hop is a nice drinkable British-style ale…I’d buy it again.

Japan: URLs Are Totally Out →
The Japanese have realized two things: The good URLs are already taken. Most people don’t type them in anyway…they just use search engines. The result? “AOL Keywords” reborn.

Linux Tip: Look Up Hard Disk UUID
A couple of releases ago, Ubuntu began using UUIDs instead of device names (e.g. /dev/hda1) to refer to hard disk partitions. The rationale behind this move was that users would be able to move storage devices around and still be able to count on them mounting in the same location. A great idea, to be sure; but when it comes time to edit that file manually, it’s not exactly what...

Comcast Cameras to Start Watching You? →
Comcast is experimenting with putting cameras in their cable boxes that detect who’s in the living room so that they can “add value to the viewing experience” (sidebar: the words “add value” are generally the meat in a bullshit sandwich). I suppose the situation could be remedied with a piece of electrical tape, but I don’t think I could bring myself to let the...

Wire Your Living Room Over Wi-Fi with a Bridge →
I’ve occasionally needed a wired connection in the living room (the new DirecTV box doesn’t have wireless), and I’ve been looking for a use for my old wireless router ever since I bought the beefier model so I could run DD-WRT.

1 book * 1 movie = $1 zillion 1 book * 2 movies = $2 zillion Looks like they’re going to do the same thing to The Hobbit If this works, expect every mass-market literary adaptation to follow this formula for the next several years.

An hour and a half with Barack Obama →
Marc Andreessen recounts a private meeting that he had with Sen. Obama before all the campaign madness. The more I hear about this guy, the more I like him. I can’t truthfully say that about McCain, although if they turn out to be the two nominees, the 2008 election will be the best in years, maybe decades (for the record, I’m still undecided).

Bell's Hopslam Ale
Double/Imperial IPA, brewed with honey.  Alc. 10% by Vol. Pours copper-orange with a smallish off-white head.  Big citrus-pine aroma, typical of an IPA.  Despite the copious amount of hops, the flavor is well-balanced with malt sweetness and honey.  The 10% alcohol is extremely well-hidden…this one could sneak up on you if you aren’t careful.  Quite simply, Hopslam is one of the best...
