What is svchost.exe And Why Is It Running? →
I’ve long known that all those svchost.exe processes are containers for services, but until now, I didn’t know how to figure out which one went to which service(s).

Founders Curmudgeon Old Ale →
I’ve found a new favorite here. Copper in color, aroma is sweet, but a bit boozy. Flavor is heavy on the malt and a bit fruity with a bit of caramel. The 9.3% alcohol is extremely well-hidden. I will be getting this again.

Samuel Adams Scotch Ale →
Smoky. Malty. Delicious. Hints of chocolate, coffee, and a little Scotch Whisky (likely from the peat-smoked malt).

Time Warner Links Web Prices With Usage →
Oh Crap…I hope this doesn’t catch on. Time Warner is going to pilot a new tiered internet pricing system that will charge users based on the amount of data they download. It seems to make sense, but I’ve rather enjoyed having my connection subsidized by casual web surfers.

This is a really good beer…if you’re a girl that doesn’t like beer. It’s just sickeningly sweet. If you’d like a Lienie’s, their Red and Sunset Wheat are solid choices, and are just short of amazing given the price.

thesixtyone in Ubuntu/Linux
If you’re a Linux user and you’re checking out some new music on thesixtyone, you may need the newest version of Adobe Flash (I found it here).  Kudos to thesixtyone for the little popup which made it crystal clear what the problem was.

This is a great site for new music…and it appears to be free of major label BS. UPDATE: This site has some of the best client-side scripting I’ve ever seen!  The little popups on the bottom right are a very nice touch.

They just don’t get it. First amendment issues aside, any company that starts filtering their networks for copyrighted material will lose not just their common carrier status, but their customers as well.

This could be a big step up from corn-based ethanol. Using switchgrass instead of corn raises yields by utilizing the entire plant instead of just the kernels. It also eliminates the food supply concerns created by using a staple food for fuel.

Sony BMG trades cards for downloaded tunes →
It’s still early January, but this could go down as the dumbest idea of 2008: Sony’s new DRM-free downloads will be available only by a code from the back of a card purchased in a retail store (which will then be deposited in a landfill). Their reasoning? While conventional download services, such as iTunes, (AAPL) make impulse music buying easier than the cards, Sony BMG feels...

DRM Officially Dead: Last Major Label Sony BMG... →
They’re dropping it an the Amazon Music Store, at least. They still have DRM on most of the tracks over at iTunes, and I think it’ll still be a while before you see this with movies. Nonetheless, this is definitely a big step in the right direction. UPDATE: This isn’t a done deal.  However, their attitude towards DRM is softening; they are giving iPod owners a workaround to...

This is a great piece by former Dateline NBC correspondent John Hockenberry about exactly what’s gone wrong with television news. Namely, that they try to attract viewers with entertainment at the expense of actual news. From the article:“Sometimes entertainment actually drove selection of news stories. Since Dateline was the lead-in to the hit series Law & Order on Friday nights,...
