Hardy Heron (8.04) will be released in April and will be the next Long-Term Support (LTS) release.  I was hoping they’d call it Horny Hamster Hungry Hippo.

Landshark Lager →
Contract brewed by Anheuser-Busch for Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville (a fact that they are trying to downplay). It is marketed as an “original island lager,” and tastes like something you might buy at a Caribbean poolside bar…refreshing, but ordinary. It tastes like a cross between Miller and Corona, and you would be better served to buy one of them. The best thing I can...

Keep Your Beer Cold With Dry Ice →
Last weekend I went to Michigan International Speedway Swamp for the NASCAR race. As you might imagine, I went on a few ice runs while I was there. On Saturday, as I was hauling back a wagon full of $9 bags of ice, a guy stopped me with this tip: before you leave, put a chunk of dry ice in the bottom of your cooler, cover it with regular ice, drop in your beer, and you’ll be set for the...

Report: National strategy needed to fight fat →
How about this for a start: Remove vending machines from schools. Make nutrition education part of school curriculum starting at the elementary level and make it a requirement for high school graduation. Tax junk food/soda until people start to use them as occasional treats instead of staples (which is what they should be). Restaurant food should be included. We eat out way too often in this...

Verlander rolls behind Tigers' 16 runs →
The Tigers took the series from the Yankees in a 16-0 laugher.  Verlander looked like himself for the first time in a few starts, pitching seven innings of shutout baseball.  Hopefully this is the spark that they needed to get back on track for the stretch run…

Harpoon Ale →
This amber ale is good, but not spectacular.  Pours golden amber with a minimal off-white head.  There is a slight fruitiness in the aroma, and the flavor is balanced well with hop bitterness.  When I was in Boston last spring, I got a chance to check out their IPA, and I remember it being much better than this.

Sleepy? Cut out late-night Internet and TV →
A new study shows that people who use the Internet or watch TV before bed get the same amount of sleep as people who don’t, but they are much more likely to feel as though they didn’t get enough. I have definitely noticed that I’ve been getting to sleep much better since I switched from the web to audiobooks before bed about a month ago.

This is a great stout. It pours pitch black with a dark tan head. Roasty dark chocolate flavor with a hint of coffee. It has a creamy mouthfeel with perfect carbonation for a stout.

Looks like some waste of sperm wanted to be just like their hero Michael Vick.  Seriously, people who do shit like this need to die.  Not probation, not jail time, a beatdown.  As the world is overpopulated already, we don’t need them reproducing.

BP says it won't increase discharge into Lake... →
(Followup to my rant from 7/15/2007) BP has caved to the enormous pressure from environmentalists and lawmakers and announced that they won’t increase their Lake Michigan pollution level after all. I’d still like to see the permit get rescinded so that they’re not tempted to have a change of heart once no one is looking.

Rock Your iPod With an Open-Source Upgrade →
RockBox is an open source firmware replacement for iPods and other mp3 players.  It has quite a few enhancements over the stock Apple firmware, such as a vastly improved EQ, themes, and support for more codecs, such as FLAC and Ogg Vorbis (I had to re-rip all of my CDs when I got my iPod because of the lack of Ogg support).  I’ve been looking to ditch iTunes anyway, so why not open up the...

Unreal Tournament 3 For Linux Confirmed →
About two years ago, I was laughed at for predicting that most major games would be released for Linux within five years.  It’s still not a sure thing, but I think that we really only need a few major releases within the same year for Linux gaming to hit critical mass.

This article offers some much-needed perspective on the way the U.S. Department of Homeland Security pisses away our money. For example: “TSA will have spent more than $14.7 billion in five years screening airline passengers when it could have reduced most of the risk with a single measure that will cost only $100 million over 10 years: reinforcing cockpit doors. A would-be hijacker’s...

Bell's Two Hearted Ale
This beer is one of my absolute favorites.  It pours a nice golden orange and has a spicy, floral hop aroma and a crisp, smooth flavor.  Lightweights beware: that smooth flavor hides the 7% alcohol quite well.  This is simply a superb IPA.

Red Hook ESB
There’s not much in the way of aroma, but Red Hook’s ESB is well-balanced and has a nice bitter finish.  I can’t say that it’s one of my favorites, but it’s definitely worth a try.

Being Unhealthy Could Cost You -- Money →
Instead of offering nominal incentives for their employees to meet health goals, some companies are beginning to charge their employees more for health insurance if they don’t meet those goals. To be honest, I’m surprised I haven’t seen this before. Your auto insurance will cost more if you have had a few tickets; why should healthy co-workers have to pay for the extra risk...
